In Fall 2009, Laura attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies where she learned how to produce, write, narrate, and edit audio documentaries and multimedia work.
After graduating, she started volunteering at WMPG, Portland’s Community Radio Station where she became the PSA Manager. In the Summer of 2010, Laura began interning with the NPR show State of the Re:Union. In August 2010 she moved to Detroit and began interning in the production department at WDET, Detroit Public Radio. Six months later she was hired as a producer of WDET’s live, two-hour long daily talk show, The Craig Fahle Show. Laura worked as an Assistant Producer for WDET’s award-winning series, the Detroit-Berlin Connection and as a Producer on the team that developed WDET’s video series, “Crossing the Lines.” Laura has been a stringer for the BBC and Radio Ireland and she’s done tape syncs for NPR and American Public Media. Her radio features have aired on The Story, Oregon Public Broadcasting, WMPG, WBAI, WDET and BigShed: The Audio Documentary Podcast. In 2011 she received the Director’s Choice Award for Big Shed’s Verite +1 Contest. Currently she is working to create the Detroit Mobile Audio Tour. She pays the bills by freelancing and transcribing audio. Luckily the cost of living is low in Detroit, especially without a car.
